ஜான் மார்ஷலை ஏன் கொண்டாட வேண்டும்?

தொல்லியல் ஆய்வுகளின்வழி இந்திய வரலாற்றை வளர்த்தெடுத்ததோடு இந்தியத் துணைக்கண்டத்தில் உள்ள பண்பாட்டுச் சின்னங்கள், தொல்பொருட்கள் ஆகியவற்றைப் பாதுகாப்பது தொடர்பாகவும், அகழாய்வு இடத்தில் வைத்து, அருங்காட்சியங்கள் உருவாக்குதல் தொடர்பாகவும் முன்னோடி செயல்பாடுகளை மேற்கொண்டவர் ஜான் மார்ஷல்தான். தனது வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் இந்தியத் தொல்லியல் கழகத்திற்காக அர்ப்பணித்தவர்.

இந்தியத் தொல்லியல் வரலாற்றில் முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த ஆளுமையாக திகழ்ந்தவர் ஜான் மார்ஷல் குறித்து தமிழ்நாட்டில் தவிர, வேறு எங்குமே யாருமே பொதுவெளியில் பேசுவதில்லை, ஏன்? அவரின் பங்களிப்புகள் குறித்து பேசமால் மௌனமாய் இருக்கின்றனர், ஏன்? அல்லது அவருக்குப் பதிலாக, அவர் செய்த பணிகளை மற்றவர்களின்மீது ஏற்றி வைத்துப் பேசுகின்றனர், ஏன்? ஜான் மார்ஷலுக்கு மட்டும் ஏன் இந்த வஞ்சனை?

இத்தகைய கேள்விகளின் ஊடாக எழுந்ததே இந்த ‘ஜான் மார்ஷலை ஏன் கொண்டாட வேண்டும்?’ என்ற நூலாகும். இந்நூலை எழுதத் தொடங்கும்போதே, அவர் கொண்டாடப்பட்டததற்கான காரணமும் தெளிவாகத் தெரிந்தது. அதேநேரத்தில் மற்றவர்களால் அவர் கொண்டாடப்படாமல் இருப்பதற்கான காரணங்களும் அறிய முடிகிறது. இந்நூலை வாசிப்பதன்மூலம் வாசகர்களும் அதனைத் தெளிவாக அறிந்து கொள்ளலாம்.

Balakrishnan is a postgraduate in Tamil Literature. He is the first student of Tamil literature to clear the Civil Services exam. He joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1984. His initial postings in the Tribal areas of Odisha triggered his interest in Indology, Anthropology and Place-name Studies. It was Iravatham Mahadevan who led Balakrishnan into the area of Indus Studies. Balakrishnan has published several research papers on Place-name Studies, Odisha’s history, and it’s plural culture.

Using Geographical Information System tools he formulated the‘Korkai-Vanji-Tondi Complex’, a place name complex in the Indusgeography which was formally announced in 2010. His paper on High-West: Low-East Dichotomy of Indus Cities and it’s linguistic paradigm gained wide attention. His Tamil book on the Dravidianfoundations of Indus Civilization received accolades from Iravatham Mahadevan as the best book written in Tamil on the subject.

Balakrishnan is an author, poet and has published several books in Tamil. After thirty-four years of service with the Government of Odisha and the Government of India, he retired from the Civil Services in 2018. He is currently the Honorary Consultant of the Indus Research Centre of the Roja Muthiah Research Library, Chennai.

Sundar Ganesan is an archivist, curator and researcher. He is one of the founders of the RMRL Trust. He established the Indus Research Centre following the advice of Thiru. Iravatham Mahadevan in 2007. The centre is now headed by Mr. R. Balakrishnan. Sundar is one of the few people who were trained by Iravatham Mahadevan in the subject.

He headed the project of developing the web concordance of IM77. He has co-authored papers with Mahadevan and curated two exhibitions on Indus Civilization - including the one that was organized for the World Classical Tamil Conference in 2010. He is the author of the book 'The Tall Man: Biju Patnaik' and co-authored 'Thunderous Run Bountiful Harvest' on Jallikattu. He is currently the Director of the Roja Muthiah Research Library.
